THE MAXIMAL UNIQUE AND ITS TRANSFORMATION INTO THE SIMILAR

Video, 20 minutes, 2007
According to Walter Benjamin, the unique, something of which there is only one specimen, is elevated in the auratic work of art and turned into the “maximal unique.” He contrasts this with things that exist in numerous specimens which he calls the “similar.”
Before original artworks can be brought into circulation for the purpose of communication or valorization, it is necessary to reproduce them photographically. This process of reproduction is the video’s subject matter. Cornelia Sollfrank accompanied Christoph Irrgang, a photographer specialized in art reproductions, with her camera. She observes him at work and talks to him about technical and philosophical aspects of art reproduction.
The video was realized as a part of the MuseumShop project in the Märkisches Museum Witten.

DAS MAXIMAL EINMALIGE UND SEINE TRANSFORMATION ZUM GLEICHARTIGEN

Video, 20 Minuten, 2007
